What Is Media Monitoring and How Much Does It Cost in the UAE?

Media monitoring is the tracking of news, social media and online content for mentions of your brand, competitors and industry. In the UAE it costs from nothing for basic alerts to more than AED 36,000 a year for enterprise software, while a managed service from Advertah starts at AED 1,200 a month. This guide covers what it is, what it costs and how to choose, whether you are comparing media monitoring services in the UAE or building your own setup.

What is media monitoring?

Media monitoring means watching the channels where your brand can be mentioned and turning those mentions into something you can act on. It started with press cuttings and now covers online news, blogs, forums, review sites, social media and, where available, broadcast and print. A good service does three things: it finds the mentions, it sorts them by tone and topic, and it reports on them in a form your management can use.

  • Online news sites and newspapers, in English and Arabic.
  • Social media posts and comments mentioning your brand.
  • Blogs, forums and review sites.
  • Broadcast and print, where it is available.
  • Competitor and industry coverage.

What does a media monitoring report show?

  • How many mentions you received and where.
  • The tone: positive, neutral or negative.
  • The key topics and messages being picked up.
  • Which journalists and publications cover you.
  • How your coverage compares with competitors.

Most services pair instant alerts for important mentions with a weekly or monthly summary. Alerts help in a crisis. Reports help with planning and show results to your board.

How much does media monitoring cost in the UAE?

Costs fall into three bands. The figures below are published or reported US prices converted at AED 3.6725 to the dollar. Vendors quote privately and change prices often, so treat them as a guide and confirm before you commit.

OptionTypical costBest for
Google AlertsFreeBasic English web alerts, no reporting
Self-serve tools such as AwarioFrom about AED 1,300 a yearSmall teams with time to set up and read results
Mid-range tools such as Brand24From about AED 8,800 a yearSocial and web listening with dashboards
Enterprise suites such as Meltwater or CisionRoughly AED 36,000 to AED 46,000 a year and upLarge communications teams that need news databases and broad coverage
Managed service from AdvertahFrom AED 1,200 a month, with a media review at AED 2,000Companies that want an analyst to read, filter and report

The software price is only part of the cost. Someone has to set up the search terms, remove irrelevant results and write the report. A managed service includes that work, which is why many UAE companies prefer a monthly fee to a software licence.

Do monitoring tools cover Arabic?

Not always, and not equally. A large share of regional conversation is in Arabic, and Arabic is harder for software than English because of spelling variants and dialects. Before you buy, ask for a live test using your own brand name in both English and Arabic. We cover this in detail in Monitoring Arabic and English media: what tools miss.

How do you choose a media monitoring service?

  • Which sources and languages are covered, and can you see the list?
  • How quickly are alerts sent?
  • Are reports clear enough to share with your board?
  • Does a person check the results, or is everything automated?
  • Can it be linked with your PR activity so you can see what each release achieved?

What should you do with the results?

Monitoring only pays off when someone acts on it. Respond fast to negative stories, thank journalists who cover you well, and feed what you learn into your next press release. Our guide to measuring PR results with a media analysis report shows which numbers to track.

In-house or managed: which is cheaper?

Software looks cheap until you count staff time. A self-serve tool at AED 1,300 a year still needs someone to build and refine the searches, remove irrelevant results, tag sentiment and compile a report each month. If that takes a communications officer even a day a month, the real cost is well above the licence. A managed service puts that analyst time inside the monthly fee, and it scales up or down without a new contract. In-house tools make sense when you have a dedicated PR or insights team that will use the platform every day.

Who needs media monitoring first?

  • Companies running regular PR, where you need to know which releases were picked up and by whom.
  • Brands in a sensitive sector, such as healthcare, finance, real estate or hospitality, where one negative story spreads quickly.
  • Businesses launching a product or entering the UAE, where early coverage shapes reputation.
  • Firms that compete for tenders, where a clean public record supports credibility.

What mistakes make monitoring useless?

  • Searching only for the company name and missing product names, executives and common misspellings.
  • Ignoring Arabic spellings of the brand.
  • Counting mentions without reading them. Volume without tone and topic tells you little.
  • Reports that arrive but are never discussed with the people who can act on them.
  • Starting with no goal. Decide first whether you want crisis alerts, campaign results or competitor insight.

How long does it take to start?

With a managed service, setup is usually a matter of days: agree the brand terms, competitors and languages, test the searches, then start the daily scan. Expect the first full report at the end of the first month, once enough data has built up to show a pattern.

Advertah tracks coverage, mentions and sentiment for UAE brands in English and Arabic. See our media monitoring services or request a sample report.

Prices for third-party tools come from public listings and procurement data reported by Market Intelligence Tools. Advertah prices are current at the time of writing.
